Natural beauty/Spectacular ecosystem

If one was to identify only one thing about Costa Rica that would showcase it as a country, it would have to be its natural beauty and spectacular ecosystem.  Translated form Spanish, Costa Rica means Rich Coast and deservingly so.  There is an incredible variety of flora and fauna here.  In fact, about 5% of the known species of plants and animals in the world can be found in Costa Rica, due in part to its many micro-climates. There are rainforest and cloudforest, mountains and volcanoes, tropical Pacific coast, the slightly cooler Caribbean coast, the year-round temperate central valley, and the plateau regions.

Twelve distinct ecological zones of breathtaking beauty cover an area the size of West Virginia or Nova Scotia, from the mangrove forests of the Caribbean lowlands to the misty cloudforests that blanket the top of the continental divide and back down to the sunny Pacific beaches.

G.A.P. Adventure

Nowhere else on earth is biological abundance and diversity so evident than in the Costa Rican rainforests: tropical rainforests contain more than half of all living things known to man.  Costa Rica alone has more plant species than the whole of Europe, and has the greatest density of species in the world.

Pura Vida, the pure life, a phrase that is associated with Costa Rica, is reflected in the harmonious way Costa Ricans treat their land.  About 25% percent of the land is set aside by law as protected environments.  There are about 30 national parks in the various regions of Costa Rica.  There is Santa Rosa in the Pacific North of Guanacaste province, Arenal Volcano National Park in the central part of Costa Rica, Paulo Verde National Park, and Manual Antonio in the Central Pacific just to name a few.  The country’s extraordinary beauty and diversity is a source of economic and social wellbeing.

Costa Rica has become one of the most popular places for a growing eco-tourism industry.  In fact, Costa Rica pioneered sustainable tourism certification in Central America.  The Costa Rican Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST) program aims to regulate and certify companies that comply with the country’s efforts to promote sustainability.
